Some patients have a large hiatus hernia, where a large proportion or in fact all of their stomach passes up through the diaphragm from the abdomen into the chest. This can cause many symptoms, including pain when eating, shortness of breath, severe reflux and weight loss and occasionally presents with anaemia. Sometimes these large hernias can twist inside the chest, which is very serious. Mr Andrews specialises in both the treatment of planned hernia repair and also emergency repair.

Considerable attention to care
Saturday 30th January 2016After my wife was treated at the RDE hospital in Exeter the Consultant relocated to Torbay Hospital. Because of their considerable attention to my wife's problems and when she needed a remedial operation we requested it be carried out at Torbay Hospital to where they had transferred. They and their staffs attention prior to, and after the remedial surgery, was excellent. It then transpired that a small ancillary procedure was required from the Endoscopy Dept. On the two visits necessary the attention given to my wife was, again, excellent. They explained in detail the procedure and prior to and after were kind and considerate through the entire routine. Saved my life!
Saturday 14th November 2015Hi! Can I please just post a massive THANK YOU to all the staff at Torbay Hospital. Especially the amazing surgeon Mr Andrews. A very close family member needed life saving surgery after his stomach travelled through an existing hernia and twisted. Mr Andrews took it upon himself to save his life and carry out a 6 hour operation within 24 hours notice. Any later and he might not be here as his stomach may have burst.
