Small hiatus hernias are very common and often associated with mild acid reflux indigestion for which people take long term anti-acid medication. Some patients have a large hiatus hernia, where a large proportion, or in fact all of their stomach passes up through the diaphragm from the abdomen into the chest. This can cause many symptoms, including pain when eating, shortness of breath, severe reflux, weight loss and occasionally presents with anaemia. Sometimes these large hiatus hernias can twist inside the chest and make people very unwell, which is very serious. Mr Andrews specialises in both the treatment of planned hiatus hernia repair and also emergency repair.
